Highland Hotel 7 Day Scenic Train Journey
First Day - South
Arrive at the Highland Hotel in time for dinner.
Mallaig, Sunart, Moidart & The Corran Ferry
Enjoy some of the most spectacular scenery that Scotland has to offer as you travel North on the famous 'Road to the Isles'. Visit the pretty fishing port of Mallaig, the wild landscape of Moidart and the historic mining village of Strontian. Explore some of the most rugged and remote coastlines of the West Coast with its misty islands, castles and wildlife before returning via the Corran Ferry.
Cruise Loch Ness
Scotland’s most famous Loch, known around the world thanks to its elusive monster. Loch Ness is 23 miles long and over 700ft at its deepest making it Scotland’s largest Loch in terms of volume. The Loch Ness Monster, Nessie, is undoubtedly the biggest attraction in the area. There have been rumours of a beast in the water since the 7th century but the first recorded sightings date back to 1933. The legend of Nessie remains unproven but explore this area to see for yourself!
Inverness & Aviemore
Also known as the ‘Highland Capital’, Inverness is the main city in the Scottish Highlands and although it is one of the fastest growing cities in Europe it still retains its market town atmosphere. Inverness offers a wide range of local produce and shops to explore as well as castles and heritage sites. We will travel via Loch Laggan and through scenic glens into the very heart of Scotland, Aviemore, a popular highland resort and centre for both summer visitors and winter skiers.
Glencoe, Rannoch Moor & Oban
Glencoe is undoubtedly the most popular and scenic glen in Scotland. The sheer scale and grandeur of the landscape is sure to inspire and the turbulent history of the area will fascinate visitors. Then visit nearby Rannoch Moor - one of Scotland's outstanding areas of natural wilderness, before heading to the west coast. The largest town in Argyll & The Isles, Oban is known as the 'Gateway to the Isles' and is the 'Seafood Capital of Scotland'. Oban has a way of drawing out the romantic side of visitors, with its mists that roll in from the sea and the hills which overlook the bay. The most iconic feature within Oban is McCaig's Tower, a Colosseum lookalike that stands above the town and offers wonderful views out west. From seafood to whisky, Oban offers a great range of local produce - all well worth sampling!
The Kyle of Lochalsh Railway Line
Regarded as one of the world’s most magnificent diesel railway journeys, this day trip will take you from Dingwall to the Kyle of Lochalsh near the Isle of Skye. The magnificent line was begun in 1870 and passes through craggy highland scenery. It took 27 years to complete with 29 hand built bridges, but the result is spectacular and has opened up some of the most dramatic natural landscapes in the country.
